The Association québécoise des consultantes en lactation certifiées (AQC) was asked to speak on ICI Première (Radio-Canada) Le 15-18 radio show, hosted by Annie Desrochers, on January 21, 2025.
The AQC is deeply concerned about the growing proliferation of terms used to describe individuals providing support in the field of breastfeeding: counsellor (conseillère), doula, breastfeeding coach, lactation educator or godmother (marraine). The AQC wishes to clarify that an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the only professional who has successfully completed a rigorous certification process that guarantees specialized breastfeeding skills. This process is supervised by an independent international organization, the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), which acts as a professional body. This organization ensures that all candidates meet the necessary criteria before taking the exam and manages complaints, including the potential revocation of certification if required. The role of IBCLC Lactation Consultants is to support optimal breastfeeding management and help parents achieve their breastfeeding goals. It is important to emphasize that they do not make medical diagnoses and work closely with other health professionals to offer comprehensive support to families.
The AQC has been working for several years to have IBCLC Lactation Consultants officially recognized in the Quebec healthcare system. A working committee has been set up to promote their inclusion on the list of healthcare professionals.
